Abstract

Respiratory infections are a common cause of consultation in emergency departments (EDs) in certain stations can reach 10% of all inquiries. The diagnosis of pneumonia requires the association of symptoms of lower respiratory tract infection to a new infiltrate on chest x-ray or other imaging test. To establish the severity of pneumonia prognostic scales using PSI still the CURB-65 and the most used are recommended. Depending on the severity of the epidemiological characteristics and personal history of the patient the most recommended empirical antibiotic treatment should be decided, where the treatment (outpatient, inpatient or in an intensive care unit) and intensity of diagnostic tests administered recommended to determine etiology.
