Abstract

Infectious diarrhea is the most common cause of acute diarrhea. It encompasses two large groups: watery diarrhea, which is the most common type and is mainly caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites with little invasive capacity, and inflammatory diarrhea, characterized by feces with blood and mucus, fever, and abdominal pain and which has longer incubation and resolution times. The majority of episodes are self-limited in a few days and do not require microbiological study. It is important to properly evaluate these patients in order to identify those that require studies in order to identify the microorganism involved and the need for targeted treatment.
