Abstract

In patients with fever and pain in upper right quadrant of the abdomen, the priority is to evaluate the existence of a medical condition that requires urgent medical or surgical treatment. Although these signs and symptoms suggest a hepatobiliary disease, mainly acute cholecystitis, cholangitis or liver abscess, pulmonary, renal or colonic diseases must not been forgotten. A detailed medical interrogatory and a careful physical examination, supported by haematological and biochemical tests, chest and abdominal X-ray, and abdominal ultrasonography, are essential in order to reach an accurate diagnosis and to evaluate the severity of the disease.
