Abstract

This work aims to call attention to possible confusion regarding the diagnoses of instability, sensation of instability, and/or vertigo, given that on numerous occasions these terms can cause confusion if we do not know or try to guide the patient using the medical record. This work will review each and outline the main causes responsible for them. The concepts of “stability,” “sensation of instability,” “instability,” and “vertigo” will be defined. Their anomalies will be linked to certain risk factors for their onset (extrinsic and intrinsic) and the relationship between normal gait (bipedal) and other gait types with instability will be reviewed. Lastly, it will mention different degrees of balance compromise and some types of treatment.
