Abstract

This protocol for intervention lists the main clinical actions to take when faced with first-episode psychosis (FEP). The diagnosis of FEP is clinical, supported by a detailed case history and meticulous psychopathological examination. It is essential to rule out other medical causes that may justify the symptoms and conduct a detailed physical examination and full neurological examination. The action protocol in the initial evaluation, including some recommended additional tests, are listed. Pharmacological treatment is one of the fundamental pillars of early intervention. Some general guidelines for prescribing antipsychotics (the most commonly used drugs for FEP) are provided. According to the patient's clinical characteristics, some indications can be made for supplementing pharmacological treatment with other drugs, if applicable. Lastly, some general recommendations are given on non-pharmacological interventions, which are essential for a comprehensive, effective intervention when faced with FEP.
