Abstract

A new modified token ring (MTR) protocol is presented. The performance of the new protocol is studied using simulation analysis and it is compared with the performance of the IEEE 802.5 standard token ring (STR) protocol. The results show that the MTR protocol provides shorter average packet delay and higher ring throughput than that of the STR protocol. A 45% reduction in the average packet delay is achieved by the MTR protocol over the STR protocol, under heavy traffic conditions.
