Abstract

The central nervous system of Aplysia has been found to contain two forms of proteins that bind serotonin with high affinity. These proteins share several similarities with the serotonin binding proteins that have been isolated from the vertebrate nervous system. Their ability to bind serotonin is enhanced by Fe 2+ and inhibited by Na +,-SH reagents as well as reserpine and N-acetyl-5-hydroxytryptophyl-5-hydroxytryp-tophanamide.
