Abstract

Progress in the genetic and biochemical dissection of the hrp-encoded type III secretion pathway has revealed new mechanisms by which phytophathogenic bacteria infect plants. The suggestion that bacterial gene products are ‘delivered to’ and ‘perceived by’ plants cells has fundamentally changed the way in which plant—bacterial interactions are now being viewed.
