Abstract

INTRODUCTIONA LIMITED amount of work has appeared in recent years concerning the nutrient requirements of turkeys. Of that which has appeared by far the greatest portion has been concerned with nutrient requirements beyond 8 weeks of age. Thus there is a dearth of recent information available on the most critical period of the turkey’s life for nutrients: the early starting period.A rather extensive study of the nutrient requirements for turkeys was undertaken by Oklahoma workers in the early sixties (Dunkelgod et al., 1961, 1962; Dunkelgod and Thayer, 1962; Thayer et al., 1961).These workers demonstrated that the maximum genetic potential for growth was not being obtained, at that time, with practical type diets.
