Abstract

Is forgetting a passive process of memory loss or an active process of memory erasure? If information simply leaks away from the brain during forgetting, then important memories should be as susceptible to loss as unimportant ones. An optimal storage system seems more likely to employ an active process that selectively discards information, by a mechanism adapted to preventing an overflow of unwanted memory. A recent behavioural study of transgenic mice by Genoux et al. has identified a molecular neural mechanism that is specialized towards such erasure of information [1].
