Abstract

A typical type of animal proteins known as antimicrobial proteins (AMPs) actively taking part in innate immune system are recognized as suitable alternatives to classical antibiotics to combat the development multidrug resistant bacterial strains. The protein fractions extracted from bovine heart tissue by different protein precipitating agents after acid extraction were screened for their bactericidal activity against four clinical isolates. Amongst eleven protein fractions including the acid extract, only three fractions (Phosphate buffered saline filtrate, 10% Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) precipitate and 30% Ammonium sulphate precipitate) showed antibacterial activities. The Phosphate buffered saline filtrate showed activity on two organisms (Salmonella paratyphi ,A, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and the zone of inhibitions were found to be 8mm size for both organisms. The protein fraction extracted by 10% TCA exerted activity on Salmonella typhimurium and P. aeruginosa with 12 and10 mm of inhibitory zones respectively. The 30% ammonium sulphate precipitate inhibited the growth of all the four test organisms strongly with 14-23 mm of inhibitory zones. All protein fractions exhibiting bactericidal activities did not cause haemolysis on human red blood cell of ABO blood groups. Hence further studies in this regard would be much helpful for pharmaceutical applications.
