Abstract

The combination of mutant 1508 and a Hiproly back-cross resulted in a substantial rise of the endosperm lysine content. This lysine enhancement of the double-recessives was due to increased contents of the water-soluble and glutelin proteins in addition to an increased amount of free lysine. The double-recessives are also characterized by an accumulation of free arginine, especially in the embryo. The grain weight of the double-recessives was reduced with 30%, indicating that the possibilities for utilising them in practical breeding may be limited.
