Abstract

Three ‘progressive’ and two ‘fluctuating’ isolates of Verticillium albo-atrum Reinke & Berth., from hop were compared both in terms of total protein and of specific enzyme patterns after acrylamide gel electrophoresis. Protein staining revealed that the differences between these virulent and mild forms of the ‘hop’ fungus were no greater than those established earlier between geographical isolates of V. albo-atrum from lucerne. Similarly, no clear differences in either esterase, alkaline phosphatase, amylase or peroxidase isoenzyme patterns could be associated with differences in virulence.
