Abstract

Miniaturization of electronic systems leads to the development of ever more functional and versatile products that are used in diverse environments. Ensuring quality performance of these products poses many new challenges, especially in the manufacture of components that are affected by the environment. For separable connectors, the behavior of the contact material can be altered substantially by environmental conditions and the challenge is to engineer a contact material that is both cost compatible with the application and yet provides quality performance during the entire product life span. We have studied the effect of four long chain fluorinated alkanes with different functional groups on the contact behavior of both a standard nickel deposit and a matter‐finish nickel phosphorus (Ni/P) alloy. Both contact resistance measurements and cyclic voltammetry demonstrated that some compounds performed better than others in inhibiting corrosion of nickel and Ni/P deposits.
