Abstract

It is proposed that various pre-existing medical conditions, including cerebrovascular diseases, might increase a risk for severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in Japan is relatively low, therefore the effect by cerebrovascular diseases can be distinct from that in Western countries. We analyzed the relationship between the local number of patients with pre-existing cerebrovascular diseases per population and local prevalence of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection.
