Abstract

In the article the author analyzes the views of B.N. Chicherin and M.N. Katkov on historical processes, and reveals differences in their understanding of the driving forces of the development of society. The latter is very important for the insight into their understanding of the role of the Polish Uprising of 1863. The author states that both thinkers highlighted the short-sightedness of Polish radicals who rejected the evolutionary path of development, guaranteed by the Russian government. Chicherin and Katkov claimed that Polish extremists resorted to terror, slander and deception in order to achieve their goals. While both scholars supported the government's decisive measures to suppress the rebellion, their evaluation of Russia’s subsequent policy towards Poland differed.
