Abstract

Abstract In a correctional setting, protective custody is used to separate inmates from the general population for reasons of health and safety. It can also be used to protect inmates from outside threats. There are many reasons that prisoners are placed into protective custody. Former law enforcement and corrections officers, sex offenders, child molesters, and celebrities are typically secluded from the general prison population. Some prisons have created entire wings or “sensitive needs” areas to house certain inmates. Although these facilities are designed to increase inmate safety and to accommodate the increasing number of inmates in protective custody, recent findings suggest that inmate homicides may still occur despite the prevention efforts.
