Abstract

Research on the collateral effects of volatile general anaesthetics (VGAs) has alternated between praise and panic. Initially, anaesthetic preconditioning was promoted as a neglected beneficial modality to protect vulnerable tissue. Subsequently, there has been a campaign labelling the use of VGAs as bordering on intentional brain damage. However, protection and damage may be two sides of the same coin, and manifestation of one vs the other may be influenced significantly by biological context and genetic background.
