Abstract

The poloidal field (PF) high power supply provides megawatt controllable energy to PF coils thereby initializing plasma and keeping the plasma shape and position for Experiment Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). Considering the high power and the complex operation modes of PF power supply, the protection strategy in case of PF power supply faults not only determine itself safety, but also related to the safety of EAST tokamak machine. Therefore a high reliable and full-featured interlock and protection system is critically important. In this paper, the typical faults and the design requirements of protection strategy is introduced firstly, then the protection strategy and its operating scenario for internal fault and PF coils quench is presented in detail. The operating results are also provided to prove the reliability of the protection strategy.
