Abstract

In this work, the Haar wavelet transform (HWT) is applied for the protection of SPTL. Using the HWT, the faults can be detected, classified and the faulted phase can be recognized merely, by estimating the amplitudes of HWT details coefficients of six-phase currents at fifth level decomposition. Haar wavelet is utilized for the processing and extracting features of the six-phase currents recorded at the single end only. The HWT is extensively tested using the Simulink model having voltage amplitude of 138 kV, frequency of 60 Hz, and 68 km long SPTL simulated in MATLAB. The practicability of the HWT is tested under extensive variations of fault factors. Moreover, the usefulness of the HWT is investigated for near-end relay faults, remote-end relay faults, and transforming faults. The results exemplify that the HWT effectively detect and categorizes all types of faults regardless of varying different fault factors.
