Abstract

Like others, we are interested in the extent to which the lifespan of normal human (WI-38) cells in culture (Hayflick, 1965) is a genetically-determined or environmentally-limited phenomenon. Our approach to this problem stems from our long standing interest in the area of biological oxidation and bioenergetics, and the work of Tappel’s laboratory (Tappel, 1962, 1973) which led us to consider that the free-radical mediated damage (Harman, 1956) might be amenable for investigation in human cells in culture using free-radical scavengers. In particular, that free-radical damage to membranes containing biological oxidation catalysts (Packer et al., 1967) or environmentally-induced free-radicals might be important in limiting the lifespan of WI-38 cells.
