Abstract

Multiple factors have shifted the delivery of services for children with special health care needs to community settings. The ability of care providers to ensure a safe, supportive environment for this population is challenged in emergency situations as technologic advances have broadened the capacity and spectrum of emergency responses. Collaborative development of portable individualized emergency response plans is an optimal acknowledgment of the current care environment. Illustrative care scenarios, a sample plan, and policy recommendations are provided.
