Abstract

In this article the metaphor of the journey is used to explore changes in relation to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding in the UK over the past 10 years. Research with women that helps to illuminate the way, the direction provided by government, and the removal of obstacles by the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) are highlighted. The ways in which peer support programmes are smoothing the way for women, breastfeeding organizations are building bridges, and education for health professionals is filling the gaps, are all referred to.
