Abstract
At many steel plants new molds are subjected to ~aging" or lengthy storage before they are used, which means that rust can be formed on the working surfaces of the molds to a depth of 2-3 ram. This rust can be removed ei ther by washing the molds with mol ten slag or by c leaning with brushes. These methods, however, do not aIways prevent breakage when the first ingot is cast. At the I i ' i ch Plant the author suggested that, after c leaning and blasting the molds with compressed air, they should be dressed in the casting shops with dehydrated tar. This protect ion preserves the internal surfaces of the molds from oxidation for an indefinite length of t ime, regardless of the change in the t empera ture and atmospheric conditions.
