Abstract

A new efficient protecting algorithm for dynamic multicast sessions against single fiber failure in optical WDM mesh networks, called link-based shared protection algorithm for dynamic multicast sessions (LB-SPDM), is proposed in this paper. It is based on the failure-dependent method and enables a present protection path to share wavelengths with already built protection paths as well as the sharing between working paths and protection paths of the same multicast request. We first study the problem of protecting a single tree, find a link-based approach to protect it, and then extend the approach to the dynamic case, where multicast connection requests come in sequence. The simulation with the topology of the European Optical Network shows that LB-SPDM performs better in blocking probability than the algorithm proposed in (N.K. Singhal, et al., 2003), called an optimal path-pair-based shared disjoint paths (OPP-SDP) algorithm, which has been showed in (N.K. Singhal, et al., 2003) to be more efficient than other existing algorithms
