Abstract

Ever since the first issue of the African Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health back in October 2007, it has provided African midwives and nurses with a new voice and has been a forum for African authors, as well as interested writers from outside the continent. Three years on, the journal continues to address the prevalent issues that affect health professionals all over Africa. In this issue alone the authors tackle current challenges, such as how much information is reaching young poeple today about their sexual health? There is little known about the effectiveness of information dissemination among young poeple in African countries and the article on page 161 about young people's questions and knowledge of HIV and AIDS paints a shocking picture of their misconconceptions. It is quite clear that programmes for young people are either not reaching them or are not suitable for this demographic. It is vital that reseach is conducted around teaching young people about their health because they are the next generation and represent an opportunity for change. If Africa is losing the battle against HIV and AIDS, then teaching young people about prevention and the importance of knowing their HIV status is how it can be turned around.
