Abstract
In eukaryotic cells, mRNAs can have vastly different half lives, and mRNA decay is thus an important regulatory event in gene expression. Rapid degradation of mRNAs is facilitated by the presence of a 3′ AU-rich element (ARE). Members of a family of ARE-binding proteins known as AUF1 proteins have been implicated in the decay process, and there is evidence that mRNA decay can be triggered by translation, but the general mechanism of decay has largely been unclear.
