Abstract

The historical Protagoras as well as his philosophical and rhetorical theories were well known in ancient Athens. This chapter focuses on Protagoras' Great Speech in the dialogue named after him and particularly on the part that contains the well-known myth. It ascertains in how far the speech of Plato's Protagoras taken as a whole provides information about views and methods of his historical namesake. The chapter tries to find out to what extent the myth, narrated as part of the speech, can function as a source for the historical Protagoras. There are good reasons for ascribing the basic ideas of the myth to the historical Protagoras. The chapter provides an analysis of the structure and meaning of the myth. An analysis of the specific combination of the single elements in the context of the myth is also provided in the chapter. Keywords:myth; Plato; Protagoras; Protagoras' Great Speech
