Abstract
When submandibular-gland homogenate was incubated with radioactive arachidonic acid, three radioactive metabolites were detected by thin-layer chromatography; these were identical with the prostaglandins (PG) PGE 2, PGF 2α and PGI 2. Thromboxane A 2 (TXA 2) and PGD 2 were not found. The major cyclo-oxygenase products of the parotid and sublingual glands were also PGE 2, PGF 2α and PGI 2. The PGE 2 and PGI 2 synthetic activities of the submandibular gland were the highest of any tissue examined. This PGI 2 activity was about 1.5 times higher in male than in female mice.
