Abstract

At present power crisis is one of the most exigent problems and it becomes tremendously intolerable at rural area in Bangladesh. Generally, rural areas are located far away from power distribution side, but some rural areas at costal and hill track region is more challenging, hazardous and expensive issue to supply grid power. In this case, solar home system (SHS) can be a perfect solution to energize in those rural areas. Conventional energy sources are not only limited but also liable for environment pollutions. On the contrary, Solar energy is eco-friendly and available in everywhere. Being a tropical country Bangladesh is remarkable for solar radiation. It is good news for SHS, Bangladesh Govt. takes some important steps to encourage people using solar system in rural area of Bangladesh. IDCOL is a Bangladeshi government owned nonbanking financial institute that financed installation more than 3 million Solar Home System (SHS) in rural area in August, 2014. There are some drawbacks in solar system that are high installation cost and short back up time. This paper focuses about the prospects and constraints of SHS in rural areas.
