Abstract

Proven natural gas reserves of the Arab countries amount to about 25 trillion m3 or 21% of the total world reserves. These reserves are, at present, underutilized. Gas development is critically dependent on the existence of a large market with a reliable demand. The power sector is a major candidate in most of the Arab gas producing countries. There is good potential for all Arab gas producing countries to convert power plants from oil to gas. In future, power requirements could be provided by efficient, environmentally friendly and cost-effective combined cycle power plants. The linkage of five regional power grids among the Arab countries can lead to the eventual consolidation of a pan-Arab electric system. Eventual connection of the pan-Arab grid with Europe is the ultimate development that brings Arab gas into the most optimal relationship with the global energy market.
