Abstract

The influence of agricultural, economic and political aspects on grassland production are described and discussed and reasons to account for the lower economic importance of grassland in Eastern than in Western Europe are given. The input of grassland to food production, its production and utilization, the ecological suitability of the area for grassland production, its place in the general structure of agricultural production and in particular in relation to the agricultural policy of Eastern Europe is discussed.
