Abstract

Concern about recent increases in severe GAS infections led the CDPH to conduct active surveillance among hospitalized patients from 7/1-12/31/94. CDPH was notified of all GAS isolates from hospitalized patients; isolates(from sterile and from non-sterile sites) were collected and serotyped. During the study period 133 persons were hospitalized with GAS infections (4.1 cases/100,000 population). Rates were highest for children (6.1/100,000) and adults >64 yrs (4.9/100,000). Of the 133 patients, 52 (39%) had GAS isolated from a normally sterile site. 19 patients (14%) had severe GAS infections (i.e., those resulting in death or in complications); 3 died as a result of their GAS infection.
