This chapter reviews the historical trends of the world's major oil and gas reserves, their production and consumption, and their future outlook. The chapter also surveys the effect of non-fossil-fuel and unconventional-fossil-fuel energy sources on future energy prospects. The authors summarize the methods that typically are implemented to estimate oil and gas reserves and the major sources of uncertainties associated with these estimates. The authors introduce energy systems models that represent a powerful tool in developing energy infrastructures that efficiently utilize available energy resources.
