Abstract

Statement of the Problem: The timing of third molar removal in patients undergoing sagittal split osteotomy (SSO) is still a subject of controversy. Some authors reported that the presence of third molar during SSO was associated with increased operating time, technical difficulty and incidence of unfavorable fracture, recommending their removal at least 6 months prior to the procedure. Other studies suggested that removing third molars with the SSO limits risks, is cost efficient, and is associated with a decreased incidence of unfavorable fracture, recommending their concomitant removal with SSO. The purpose of this study was to prospectively investigate the effect of the presence or absence of third molar on the ability to perform SSO.
