Abstract

A high resolution (13°), wide angle (30°) ultrasonic scanning equipment based on modulation scanning has been applied to various branches of underwater work.A special sea trial has established the effectiveness of the equipment in detecting and delineating fish shoals during underway searching; tracking shoal movements and studying changes of formation from an anchored position; observing midwater trawls in action and the distribution of fish therein; and studying fish behaviour in relation to the trawl. The equipment performed all these tasks at ranges extending to 200 yd.Trials work relating to sea bed surveying and the location of wrecks is also described. The paper concludes with a discussion of operational experience gained so far and its effect on the performance requirements for various applications.
