Abstract

The paper describes the research results considering transmission lines with a nominal voltage of 400 kV on mountainous rocky terrain with high specific soil resistance. Due to the strong electric field in the vicinity of the grounding system, the effect of local soil ionization occurs. Thus, the soil ionization model according to the IEC standard was used in the calculation. The statistical calculation method is described and the results of the annual number of insulation flashovers scaled to 100 km of transmission lines for different values of specific soil resistance are given. As a overvoltahe protection, line surge arresters on critical sections or the bentonite application are suggested.
