Abstract

The various propulsion systems for space travel are surveyed, emphasizing the propulsion requirements of various missions. Liquid-, solid-, and hybrid-propellant rocket engines, and nuclear, arc-jet, ion-accelerator, magnetogasdynamic, solar-sail, solar-collector, and matter-conversion propulsion methods are considered. Performance characteristics of some of the systems are included.
