Abstract

In this paper are presented possible applications of microwaves to propulsion. First, some basic propulsion principles are reviewed to the extent necessary to expose what follows. Next, the functions that can be performed by microwave power in the propulsion field are studied. Areas of possible applicability and their boundaries are analyzed. Among these areas are spacecraft launching, power transmission in space, and ground take-off assist for fuel economy. Power requirements are presented for some specific cases. The problems associated with the use of microwaves as part of the power system are outlined, as are some means of solution.
