Abstract

A new and ultra-high-speed algorithm for the fault type classification and identification of the faulted phases based on traveling waves (TW) is proposed in this paper. In this algorithm, the Karen-Bauer matrix is used for the phase-to-modal transformation process. Then wavelet transform (WT) with a high output resolution is used to extract the TWs from the modal components. The proposed algorithm is designed based on comparing the first TW amplitude of different modal components and the numerical and definitive criteria. This way, the algorithm is very easy to understand and to be used for the relay programming.
