Abstract

This “Current Issues” symposium will bring the ACSM members up to date concerning the updating/revision of the 1990 Position Stand on“The Recommended Quantity and Quality of Exercise for Developing and Maintaining Cardiorespiratory and Muscular Fitness in Healthy Adults.” The program will begin with the historical perspective which will focus on the two previously published stands (MSSE 1978 & 1990). Issues concerning the“definition of fitness,” current research in the areas of cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, adherence to exercise training and research with females and the elderly will be highlighted. Also, should the new position stand include a statement and recommendation concerning flexibility exercise? How the new Position Stand relates to other recent exercise/physical activity statements will be addressed. The Position Stand will be presented in preliminary form so that ACSM members will have the opportunity to discuss and make comments.
