Abstract

The elaboration of a demo Renewable Energy Farm (REF) and energy management system is supported by a Hungarian distribution system operator (DSO), in order to gather useful information for the investigation of ancillary services provided by smart distribution networks. The farm consists of small and micro generation units utilizing renewable sources, controllable loads and a dispatcher centre. The aim of present work was to prepare a draft of the function and task specification that is necessary to install the energy management system. The task is challenging, since monitoring and management of a smart network with such built-in capacity (100 kW's) shows similar issues as the control of a national power system. When preparing our recommendations, we focused on medium-term goals as well, like measurement, operation and control needs of smart distribution networks. Results of present work and operation experience gathered at the site of the REF will be used by the DSO in other research and development projects in the future.
