Abstract

Previous studies have shown that the pattern of growth in both the upper and lower jaws changes at about the 20th week of intrauterine life. In the present investigation, the proportionate growth of the mandible and palate has been studied in foetuses aged 16 to 27 weeks to obtain further data for this transitional phase. The findings are in agreement with those of earlier workers. In the first half of this period, the palate became relatively narrower, indicating more rapid growth in length than in breadth, but from 22 weeks onwards the shape of the palate altered little. Similarly, in the mandible, length increased more than breadth over the total period investigated. Between 16 and 18 weeks, however, the lower jaw became relatively broader probably as a result of the slowing of growth in mandibular length that occurs between 12 and 20 weeks.
