Abstract
Excessive prescribing of benzodiazepine is a problem in many countries, which requires enhancement of the knowledge and attitude of their rational prescription. In the Outpatient Department Banja Luka, in the course of 6 months, the knowledge and the way of prescribing the benzodiazepine was examined by means of the questionnaires amongst the family medicine doctors. The questionnaire was also answered by 981 patients. The results showed that 341 patient (34.76%) out of the total number of examined ones, was prescribed benzodiazepine, mostly diazepam (252 patients, 73.90%). Benzodiazepines were most often prescribed for non-psychiatric diseases, such is essential hypertension and other cardio-vascular diseases (66.27%). A significant number of patients took benzodiazepine on need basis, in the period of over one year (69.79%) or several months (26.39%). Majority of the patients were not aware of possible unwanted effects of benzodiazepine (87.68%). There is an irrational prescribing of benzodiazepine in cases of organic diseases, particularly cardio-vascular diseases, thus it is necessary to influence the prescribing habits of the doctors in order to achieve a rational prescribing.
