Abstract

The postoperative complications following anesthesia for outpatient surgery were tabulated in a group of 100 dental patients and 250 gynecological patients. Common late complications included dizziness (46% of dental patients and 32.5% of gynecological patients) nausea and vomiting (35% and 13.2%) headache (26% and 16.8%) sore arm (23% and 32.8%) sore throat (69% and 5.6%) and muscle pain or weakness (12% and 1.6%). Several steps are suggested to reduce the incidence of these complaints. Serious respiratory and circulatory complications can be avoided by careful selection of patients and procedures. Many common postoperative problems can be prevented by use of techniques that ensure early arousal. To manage nausea and vomiting inflation of the stomach should be avoided by adequate airway management postoperative narcotics should be discouraged and the patient should be made aware that the problem is self-limiting. Adequate discharge criteria is the most important factor in preventing patient complaint and ensuring patient safety.
