Abstract

(Int J Obstet Anesth. 2018;33:67–71) The most commonly used mechanical-assist device for the management of heart failure is the intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP). The balance between myocardial oxygen supply and demand is improved via the device’s counter-pulsation. Although some case reports have mentioned the use of IABP counter-pulsation for circulatory support in pregnant women with cardiac failure, few publications have discussed its use during delivery. This case report described the successful management of a patient with peripartum cardiomyopathy who underwent cesarean delivery using preemptive IABP counter-pulsation.
