Abstract
Schou M. Prophylactic treatment of mood disorders. The future for prophylactic treatment of mood disorders is bound to research on the mode of action of agents and procedures that exert therapeutic and prophylactic action; a strategy for such studies is suggested. Research on how to improve efficacy and safety of the treatments is also important and has yielded revised guidelines for lithium administration. Immediate yield may come from examining reasons why some patients do not benefit from prophylactic drug treatment. Non-pharmacological factors may play a significant role, and non-pharmacological remedies may be required. They include patient selection, treatment execution, patient and therapist attitudes and education, supplementary psychological and social support, and the organization of the treatment.
