Abstract

We present a case of a morbidly obese patient with respiratory insufficiency who received a prophylactic tracheostomy one day prior to undergoing Roux-en-Y gastro-intestinal bypass surgery. The patient had an uneventful hospital course and was discharged to a ventilator weaning facility. We discuss the predictors of a prolonged ventilator course and the indications for prophylactic tracheostomy and a review of the literature.
