Abstract

This paper investigates the nonlinear system of algebraic equations arising from the transfer function of a linear time-invariant compartmental model. Properties of the system and its Jacobian matrix are found. An existence theorem for positive solutions of the system is given. Computation of the model parameters is discussed, based on a combinatorial simplex method and Newton's method. Finally, some sources of nonuniqueness due to symmetry among the equations, and the subsequent effect on the determinant of the system Jacobian, are investigated.
