Abstract

Abstract The liquid crystal transition temperatures of the N-oxides of seven 4-(4′-n-alkoxyphenyl)pyridines are reported. The transition temperatures of the mesophases formed by these N-oxides and by the 4′-n-alkoxy-4-cyanobiphenyls are compared and the effects of the N-oxide function and the cyano-group as mesogenic terminal substituents are discussed.
